Well... What about the cyborgs being optional? You can either evolve the "Self consciousness" symptom or not so you have 2 options:
Option A) Y2K
Option B) Skynet

Let's make the virus divide in 2 branches:
Branch A is for a Skynet-like computer virus
Branch B is for a Y2K-like computer virus
By doing this we can have a mixture of nuclear missiles being launched while an army of cyborgs kills everyone.

The original idea was of nukes,CPU-controlled medical equipment,airplanes,heat stations,ships,sattelites,phones etc etc etc all going berserk or CABOOM!
